What is a Sybil?

A Sybil is a fake or fraudulent identity created to manipulate systems. Sybil identities are used to:

  • Manipulate voting — Inflate vote counts in governance or polling systems.
  • Distort reputation — Artificially boost credibility or ratings.
  • Drain rewards — Claim tokens, airdrops, or incentives multiple times.

How Passport Defends Against Sybils

Human Passport uses an aggregate Stamp-based verification system combined with machine learning models to distinguish real humans from Sybil identities. By requiring users to verify credentials across multiple independent providers, Passport makes it costly and difficult for attackers to fabricate a convincing identity.

An Evolving Challenge

Sybil attackers continually innovate their methods. Platforms and protocols that rely on identity verification must evolve their defenses in response. Passport regularly updates its Stamp weights, adds new verification providers, and refines its scoring models to stay ahead of emerging threats.
